1. Secret society – A book you love but no one else talks about

The Chrysalids by John Wyndham. It’s about a group of children who live in a town where it’s better not to be different. One is a telepath, another has six toes. The town citizens are deeply religious and believe that God does not make mistakes therefore their deviant existence must be the work of the devil.

2. Voices – A scary novel that gives you the chills!

It by Stephen King. A shapeshifting entity that can disguise itself as anything and exploits your fears and phobias… Oh and by the way likes to eat children. Enough said. I don’t even want to talk about it and I’m a full-blown adult. Don’t even get me started on the clown thing.

3. Blood crystals – A book with red on the cover

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It’s about a seventeenth century woman who commits adultery and must wear a scarlet letter ‘A’ to mark her shame. The story is set in a Puritan society but could very well exist today with regard to society’s attitude towards the adulteress and her male lover.

4. Kidnapped – A stand-alone novel you love

Animal Farm by George Orwell. It’s a phenomenal novella about a group of animals who successfully revolt against their human farmer only to become worse by creating a new tyranny among themselves. The ending is one of the best that I’ve ever read. I did this book in school—years ago—I never forgot it.

5. Jesse – A bookish crush you have

Percy Jackson from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I like the way he overcame his internal struggles of ADHD and dyslexia to become a hero to others. Furthermore his loyalty towards his friends and family as well as the sacrifices he makes for his mother.

6. Elysia – A book that nailed a magical setting

The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. I think it’s safe to say that everyone has either read the novels or watched the movies so a summary explanation might be irrelevant. However, the setting and world building is extraordinary—I wanted to live in Middle Earth for a long time.

7. Transmutation – What’s your favourite fantasy animal?

I’ve always loved unicorns with Pegasus a close second. I think every little girl at one time or another wanted a unicorn for their birthday. What can I say? I love colourful horses.

8. Oracles – A book with magical folk

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. There are magical creatures in this novel that I’ve never read about in other fantasy novels like luckdragons, rockbiters, invisible oracles and giant turtles. Fantasy genre has come a long way but this is a classic for me that I like to revisit ever so often.

9. Brethren – A book with a core group you love

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. The main protagonists: Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are children when they help Aslan save Narnia from the White Witch. Kids like to feel important and want to know that they matter and these children literally saves the world. I love their sibling dynamic.

And remember, no matter where you live, take a little time to enjoy the island life!
